It has been said that behind every coach is a supportive spouse. This has always been true for me through my almost twenty years of coaching. Well this year I get to be that spouse. I am not coaching and so I do the laundry, pack lunches, go to the grocery store and do my best to make sure my wife eats healthy. I have to say I love it because I am not just supporting her but I am able to assist her in something she loves and has a great deal of passion for. It brings me pride and joy to know that my wife, our local high school's girls lacrosse coach, is able to go to practice and not have to worry about the home front.
Now we do not have kids or pets but we do have busy lives. I know that she never stops thinking about what we need at the grocery store or what is needed for me as a 1st year teacher, but that it was makes her an incredible wife. For her to take as much time as she does for her girls during the season, my job is simple - support her. When she is with her team, she needs to have one focus, perparing her team to be successful.
A varsity season is a long and at times strenuous. She has had her fair share of ups and downs this year and this week was their first home game. Watching her deal with these situations as they arise is remarkable. She has poise, dignity and holds the integrity of the school in the highest regards. Her players are blessed to have a coach that cares about not only their skill development but also their well-being.
She and I were talking about coaching as it seems to be much of our conversations. Well that or The Bachelor. She made the point that we experience the success that we do because we enjoy the kids and seeing them succeed is her motivation to be a coach.
Watching her coach and hearing most nights that they had a good practice make me smile because I couldn't be happier for her. Seeing her smile after a long day and then practice motivates me to be more willing to uphold the home front. I am more then willing to do this because at the core of this I have found a new appreciation for Coach Kristin. Being the spouse, seeing "in-season" from another perspective has allowed me to see just how incredible my wife is and I am happy to be her support and #1 fan!
