So as the summer season has ended and we are headed into fall baseball, it is important for me to reflect upon what we have done and where we are going. I do this after any season because I want to model behaviors that I want my players to do. From season to season I will tweak drills, instruction or policies as needed. As we grow as players and coaches there are things that are bigger then sport, growing as men. My ability to reflect helps me remember that while I want to win games and go to the post season, my job is to help create an environment where players can take succeed.
The summer season was a great success, from a win loss standpoint but also from a talent standpoint. We more then doubled our win total. Going into the final week of the season we were in the discussion for the post season, we ended up falling a little short but to go from the cellar of the league last year to having a chance at the state tournament is quite a turnaround.
While we fell short parents were very positive about the summer season. They were thankful for the experience for the opportunity to have their child be exposed to the high school game. We have a young strong core of players so having parent "buy-in" is a major plus!
One thing I could always count on was this group of players always gave their best physical effort, there were times that the mental grind would catch up to them but never the less they still played as hard as they could and as a coach that is great. As I look back at seasons I remember that "hindsight is 20-20". We can get so caught up on the what ifs, and that can cause a great deal of headache. Looking back it is important that we learn from our mistakes however it is equally importnat to build on the positives, this way there is positive motivation and it will help me to stay productive and to not get stuck on any negatives.
Reflection is the best way that I can show my team that I look to the best I can every day. I ask my players to practice with a purpose, this is my best way to show that I am doing the same and trying to improve everyday.
