Fall ball is such a unique season, players, parents and even some coaches see another opprtunity to win a championship. For me living in Summit County CO this is an opportunity to continue to build baseball in our community. Baseball is such a great game but it is also an intriquite game. So fall ball is a chance for me to devlop a passion and a love for the game in my players. It starts with it has to be fun. Derek Jeter said during his farewell tour that he has been privliged "to play a kids game for 30 years." I want my players to play a kids game through high school, fall ball is one more chance to facilitate this happening.
For my assistant Justin and I we do this through a variety of ways. First off, the expectation is that if you want to play, you need to be a good teammate. Control what you can control, your attitude and your effort, baseball is a game that comes from adversity so its up to teammates to pick yourself and each other up at practice and at games. We tell our guys do want you can do to help this team be successful.
High School kids perform best when somthing is on the line. We played this fall in a wood bat league. There is a learning curve for wood bats so at practice we made games and the loosing team typically had to clean up the gear. This way tkids are able to practice performing in the clutch. Failing at practice gives players a chance to see what needs to hsppen to overcome adversity as well.
Our fall league finishes with a single elimination tournament, we won our first game with players in the bottom part of our order coming up with clutch hits. In the second game we lost a one run ball game, our pitching handcuffed the best lineup in the league. I got in my car and as any good coach does I reflected on where we have been and where we are headed, fall baseball was successful because we enjoy playing a kids game and we are continuing to build baseball in our great community of Summit County.
